Avian flu panic = Tamiflu sales = Rumsfeld
Not LANL-related, but the following has some of the same character as what is happening at LANL. Sent to me by Anonymous:

That’s an interesting equation. Isn’t it? This is where I read about it.
The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world. The name George Shutlz is mentioned in this CNN article and should ring a bell with everyone. He's a well known Republican who sit on the Board of Bechtel, our new corporate master.
This up-coming ABC movie should gen-up some very nice profits for
Tamiflu and scare the Holy Be-Jesus out of the American public...

WASHINGTON Apr 28, 2006 (AP)— Bodies piling up so quickly it takes
dump trucks to haul them away. Barbed wire to keep whole neighborhoods
quarantined. It's Hollywood's version of bird flu, a blur of fact and
fiction that some scientists say could confuse the public.
"Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America," an ABC made-for-television movie,
airs May 9...
In one scene, the bodies are thrown on a pyre, like the carcasses of
cows torched in the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Great Britain.
....................................................................
Why worry about $3 gas, Iran, immigration, and Global Warming when
you've got better stuff like this to scare the public.

More silly reporting with no connection to LANS. So why it is evil to own stock in a company that makes Tamiflu? There is no secret in this. Perhaps a lot of hysteria. If birdflu truly crosses the species boundary Tamiflu probably won't help much. This is hysteria just like $3/gallon gas that isn't really significantly higher than it was 25 years ago in real dollars. And an industry that makes about the average percentage profit is being attacked for "windfall" profits. I don't mind the attacks, but it would be nice if people actually thought about these things rationally instead of hysterically (from both sides of the aisle).

David,
Rationality is being swamped by the shitstorms of invective and hyperventilation from both wings of the "normal" distribution. If you require "nice", I am afraid you will have to look for it in seclusion.

The interesting part of this is that experiments have shown that Tamiflu doesn't work against Bird Flu. But I bet it is selling like hot cakes.
