It ain't gonna be the same no more.

Sig was one of us. He was an accomplished scientist and knew what it took to do the work. And, he was in the same pension plan as us. Thus, he shared our fate.

I can say the same about John Browne. Both of these guys "served" as Director for the mutual benefit of the DOE and the employees. They are thoroughly good people. Yes, both made a few decisions that were not optimal, but I don't think that anything that they did was not well-intentioned.

Anastasio and his cronies are nothing more than overseers. They lack the experience and dedication necessary to run this place othen than into the ground.

Sign me "going to retire."

Comments:
Even then I sensed they would eventually become the good ol' days.

At the last VERIP, which I think was 1993, we had a retirement party for one of our more cynical physicists. He told us: "Hear me now and believe me later: THESE ARE THE GOOD OLD DAYS!"

How right he was!

darhtman,

I am not the cynical physicist you speak of, but I guess my gut was right too.

How does any of this make sense?

We have put both labs up for bid so that we could become more productive and possibly make a profit, but we've done this by bringing in the fantasy four under the watchful eye of the UC in hopes to make improvements. Knowing how the ranking system works and having been subjected to their internal politics for decades I view this move as nothing more then the same old s_it, different day, where the good old boy system will be alive and well; and that only those with knee pads and puckered lips are the ones who are going to rise to the top. It's not about how productive or dedicated you are, but it is about how well you go with the flow, play the game and not make waves. Yes, that means you must be a "yes" man or women in order to survive in this academics college boy environment, where most of those in command haven't a clue of what it takes to actually create a product that is marketable and on time, or else they will be required to hit the road. In my opinion these boys needed to be eliminated entirely if change for the good was the goal, but we've been awarded the top dog from LLNL whose pay checks are bigger then one could ever dream of and probably will be less productive than they ever were before they took their positions at LANS. As a short-timer and soon to be gone I will define the term BOYS as, "B" as in boy, "O" as in onion head, "Y" as in yoyo and "S" for suck as_es. Now that is something to look forward to, wouldn't you say?

Opps I forgot something that may be useful. I sent this text to LANS HR and asked if this was correct. The answer was,"at this point in time and until we see an official change from the UC Regents, it is".

Q: Explain how retirement payment or burden will be split between UC, LANS and DOE funds.

A: 1) For UC-LANL non-vested employees who elect to work for LANS and transition into the Pension Plan 1 (PP1), and UC vested employees who elect to work for LANS and transition into the PP1, LANL will work with UC to transfer assets and liabilities from the UCRP to the LANS PP1 to support future pension payments from the LANS PP1. Whether contributions will be needed in the future cannot be determined at this time.
2) For UC vested employees who elect to remain in the UCRP as an "inactive" members and transition to LANS and the Pension Plan 2 (PP2), no transfer of assets from the UCRP Plan will occur, and future pension payments will be from the UCRP Plan. Former LANL employees who retired as UC employees and LANL employees who elect to retire between now and May 31, 2006 will receive pension payments from the UCRP. Employees who participate in LANS PP2 will also receive retirement distributions from PP2 when they elect to retire.

"Employees who participate in LANS PP2 will also receive retirement distributions from PP2 when they elect to retire."

Huh?! What retirement distributions? Its just a 401k plan...with far less savings/investment capability than the present LANL 403b/457/DC plans.

Anastasio has plenty of experience relevant to running the Lab. I don't know his "cronies", so I can't comment on them. But Anastasio comes with very good credentials to run this Laboratory and very high marks from folks at Livermore. You cannot say that Anastasio lacks the "experience and dedication" needed to run the Lab. There is no basis for this statement

No one said, "You cannot say that Anastasio lacks the "experience and dedication" needed to run the Lab." It says he's a good old boy and that the system is alive and well. What division do you think the "fantasy four" came from and who are they buds with? It's just going to be more of the same, but deeper. Real deep.

B-ohica: actually, the original poster said “Anastasio and his cronies are nothing more than overseers. They lack the experience and dedication necessary to run this place other than into the ground.” You should actually read before launching yourself.

Agree with David. Lot of baseless comments and innuendo regarding Anastasio. This does not serve the blog in addresses substantive issues.

Not sure who the "fantasy four" all are, but if being from the same Division you mean the weapons programs, then that is true. If you mean their "buds" are weapon designers and testers, then that is also true.

Among other things, Mara ran N program at NTS, was the W program/DTED leader, then AD for Engineering, and then the lab as Deputy Director for Operations. Anastasio was B Division leader, AD for DNT, then Deputy Director for Strategic Operations, then Director. McMillan was the B Division leader. Knapp was the W program/DTED leader, which is a dual-hatted position between DNT and Engineering. If you understand all the acronyms, then you realize they are all from different parts of the lab, with the only common thread being the nuclear weapons program.

Frankly, I hope the leadership team selected for the LLNL/LLC knows something about nuclear weapons.

"Anastasio and his cronies are nothing more than overseers. They lack the experience and dedication necessary to run this place other than into the ground."

This statement is absolutely correct if LANS is truly there to make a profit. Now if it's going to more of the same, then there was no need for the fantasy four anyway except an excuse to raise their salaries. As you can see some people's salary will go up and some peoples salary will go down, but you will still spend the rest of you career fighting your way through the butt sniffs and bureaucratic BS that is going to be deeper then the sphincter of a giraffe.

The good news is that it will all be over very soon.

The reality is that UC has very nearly zero credibility in these parts. Mike Anastasio works for UC. Scepticism is therefore natural, and well-founded.

B-ohica said, "The good news is that it will all be over very soon."

The beginning may soon be over, but the finale is just beginning. Rather than the end of the beginning, this is the beginning of the end...
