"It’s mostly whining and character assassination of disliked managers, along with an almost religious hope that Lockheed will make everything okay when they win the contract." -Cheryl Rofer, Oct. 2, 2005

There's surely some bits of 'whinging,' as the Brits would say, here on the blog, and there are some not-so-nice things said about a few of the managers, who helped to keep on digging when we were in a deep hole, rather than stopping, as Winston Churchill advised under such circumstances.

But anyone who has a religious hope that LockMart will "fix" anything is simply in the grips of general hysteria that consumes LANL scientists these days. There's really nothing left to them, at this late point in the game, but to hope against hope.

If anyone has a better idea, please post below.

Cheryl Rofer is truly pathetic, and has a good many important facts wrong. For instance her claims that Sandia doesn't make weapons, but simply mates them to the missiles. As we should all know LANL doesn't make nuclear weapons, it makes "physics packages". All the arming and firing which makes it a weapon is done by Sandia.
Rofer also suggests that a private company might promote nuclear weapons. Just what does she think LLNL and LANL have been doing, continuing with the RRW? And why does LANL have a Staff Member in Senator Domenici's office? Why to promote nuclear weapons of course. Rofer is either stupid or dishonest, take you pick.
Lastly, she has her history dead wrong. It was NOT Los Alamos that found time to make political statements about the use of atomic bombs in 1945; it was those at the University of Chicago, led by Szilard and Franck. Los Alamos chose NOT to participate.
With her many errors, she gives LANL a bad name.

" With her many errors, she gives LANL a bad name."

Not really, but she doesn't do her own image any good by publishing inaccurate ramblings about LANL and the complex.

It should be noted that LANL doesn't need any help giving itself a bad name. It is doing quite well enough in that regard, thank you very much.

Perhaps rather than calling her pathetic or ignorant, you could attempt to educate her on the reality of life at LANL, and why lots of people are rooting for L-M. I posted to her blog last night, and mentioned this, and the Szilard petition.
Finknottle pointed out in another post that part of the bad name that LANL has is due to us. This is true. We all work on a lot of different things, but some of the gripes are similar. As an example, people in X division don't have to worry about the paperwork involved with HF use, but they have their own similar sorts of crap to deal with. I have found that most people, if you talk to them respectfully, will listen to what you have to say. Just my 2 cents.
