Schwarzenegger backs UC bid for nuclear laboratories

Governor tours Lawrence Berkeley lab's facilities

By Ian Hoffman, STAFF WRITER

BERKELEY - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger threw his strongest support yet Friday behind the University of California's efforts to keep running two nuclear weapons labs in two states.

In a bit of a coup for the university, the governors of both New Mexico and California now have endorsed UC's partnership with Bechtel National and others to bid for management of the birthplace of the bomb, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What's unclear is what the backing from Schwarzenegger and New Mexico Democrat Bill Richardson is worth.

I've read where a single DOE acquisition official is going to make the LANL contract decision. I wonder: if that person takes these stories as veiled or not-so-veiled messages from various political types as to what "the smart choice" would be...what will happen to the official if he or she makes a choice that makes the right or wrong people happy or unhappy...if the losers will sue, or if the winners will subcontract parts to the losers as they do in aerospace bid competitions....lots to wonder about. Should be entertaining, if nothing else. I can't imagine UC getting the contract, but I can easily imagine the shock the LANL staff will experience if they don't. If you think UC can't be worse than any alternative, think again.

I think we already have all the information we need about who will be worse as a contractor. The peolpe that an organization places in charge are an indication of the values they wish to put forth. UC gave us a lying, vindictive, foolish, arrogant tyrant for a "leader" and Lockmart has chosen C. Paul Robinson. Robinson has proven himself to be honest, intelligent, and completely capable of overseeing a LANL/Sandia organization.
Go Lockmart/UT. We've had enough corruption around here.

That's great because LANL will get Bechtal and LLNL will get Lockheed / Martin and the University of Texas

Gee, Schwarzenegger's support will be such a big help at this point! Where was he when the bid was being written up when we needed his support? Neither choice will be good for employees under this contract.

Still folks talking about whether "UC" will win the contract. "UC" did not bid. LANS did. There will be no UC employees at the Lab no matter who wins the contract. The NNSA RFP required that a completely separate corporation be created by all bidders to run the Lab. UC is gone, permanently, no matter what.
