Predicting the demise of the blog

Well, I'm back from vacation, and I see that a few anonymous people have been predicting the demise of the blog in my absence. Be assured, that as soon as it becomes apparent that this blog is no longer needed I will be happy to shut it down.

However, given that we are, as an earlier post put it, in the midst of the doldrums with at least another 7 months before the next contractor is named, I would have suspected that there was still a use for the LANL blog. I plan on coming back (at the request of my group) as a laboratory associate next month. If, after I return and it becomes clear to me that all problems have been solved; that everything is well at LANL, then there will clearly be no further need for this particular forum and we can all have a going away party for LANL, The Real Story.

Comments:
Until the contract is settled the blog is an extremely useful way to exchange information. Keep up the good work Doug. And thank you.

Please do not shut down this BLOG. It is the only forum for free speech and useful information we have. Thanks for all the hard work Doug.

Doug: You wrote "If, after I return and it becomes clear to me that all problems have been solved;..."

What were you smoking while on vacation? ALL OF THE PROBLEMS SOLVED! Dream on!

The blog will be useful for at least another year. Aside from the obvious cost in time for you, what is the monetary cost? How can one contribute anonymously to help you with that?

Welcome back from a much deserved vacation. Things are developing that will need blog oversight. I glad we are staying on the air.

Don't you find it ironic? Doug returning as a double dipper....

Also, how can Doug make a determination if the problems are fixed? I doubt he could recognize good management if it slapped him in that face (same goes for many of the pitiful whiners here).

Guess it's OK for certain people to become double dippers without being chastized.

This blog is self serving to those who want everything handed to them on a silver platter.

Please retire and leave for good.

Vindictive tone and nasty nature.
You sound like P. Nanos.

Agree, 08:14:17 AM has a vindictive tone and nasty nature. I would like to meet the individual in person, though.

Re: 06:21:35 AM's offer of monitary support for the blog, thanks, but not needed. The only costs I incur in maintaining the blog are time, and I am willing to spend that.

As to my "double dipping", I'll be spending maybe 1-2 days per month to help out my group, which as been decimated as a result of the shutdown. To date 12 people have left CCS-5, and they need help.

--Doug

Doug you do not need to justify your "double dipping" to us or anyone if you are needed--you are needed. Thanks for everything.

When you retire .....LEAVE. There is no need for people to return. Retirement is the door hitting you in the ass.....means do NOT come back

Doug has done LANL employees a fine service by hosting this blog.

To the 8:14 and 10:57 posters: you're as welcome as anyone I suppose to post your thoughts and opinions here, though I doubt you'll find an appreciative audience. If retirement is a door hitting you in the ass, then perhaps when you quit the Lab someday you guys will get a lot more than a mere door.

08:14:17 AM and 10:57:40 AM prove the value of letting a fool speak. If there was any doubt about the person's qualifications, they are quickly dispelled once they let everybody know what is on their minds.

Hopefully LM will will sniff out these unpleasant, and presumabaly non-productive members of LANL society and show them the door.

Thanks for keeping the blog running, Doug.

When you retire .....LEAVE. There is no need for people to return. Retirement is the door hitting you in the ass.....means do NOT come back - I'm sure CCS-5 can survive and the world alike without your kind at this laboratory.

08:14:17 AM,10:57:40 AM, and 12:51:33 PM seem to have some problem with freedom of speach. This blog certainly contributed to the departure of Admiral Butthead. It is one of the few checks and balances on LANL management. We need to keep it around to make sure that the next LANL manager knows that they are being watched.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Doug.

Man, some pretty embittered folks we have here. Not only has Doug done a great service by starting and maintaining this blog, but his willingness to help out with his old group is more akin to charity than double dipping. Doug could have retired with his UC retirement salary and have left the area to get a new full time job in industry, and be making tons of money. Quite a few other folks have retired/resigned from LANL in the past year and did just this. Instead, Doug chose to stay around and maintain the blog, and help out CCS-5 which was no doubt devasted by loss of personnel due to the rotten management of that division, which has driven a lot of folks off over the last couple of years. You go Doug!

May the blue bird of happiness fly up your nose and...

Saint DOUG - Perhaps this is in order if all the previous comments are correct. I suggest a review of this mess when UC is gone and maybe then a public lynching.

I would like to add myself to list of people, who think this blog is necessary. I believe having an unofficial outlet for our concerns and suggestions beyond the readers forum is extremely important. The only reason that some might think this blog is past it’s usefulness, is probably, because they identified LANL problems only with P. Nanos.
However, I think there are many other problems at the lab, which should be addressed, some of them DOE or even State Dept. mandated (like issues of export control and foreign nationals working here), and some also of our own doing. I would like to see the blog evolve ( we are not in Kansas, so this should be possible), to a more constructive debate and less of a name calling and flame throwing outlet. I don’t think anything is to be gained from attacking other people with bitterness and no suggestion how to improve things.

The bitterness exhibited in the anti-blog, anti-retirement comments on this post demonstrates that LANL is diseased from within; a boil that needs to be lanced. My hope is that LM can come in and put, for the first time ever, perhaps, an effective management infrastructure in place that will be able to weed out all the the counter-productive, entitlement-minded, mean-spirited, self-serving, and just plain worthless staff that seems to inhabit nearly every level of the lab.

A good house cleaning is way overdue.

Doug,
Welcome back. Hope you had a safe and mentally-reinvigorating trip. I once knew a guy who had a boat "Mental Floss." Absent boating, long rides on the motorcycle probably do the same. It's good to have some private time to sort things out in background.

And yes, from some of the postings above, there are still some bitter disfunctional people willing to snarl at everyone. Ignore them. You could even move them to a separate post entitled "Nastygrams." Then they wouldn't acuse you of censorship - and what if they do - it's your blog - and they can vent in the dark.
-Dawn-

Not a bad idea, Dawn. However after thinking about it, I believe that I prefer to leave them right where they are, out in the open for everybody to see as clear evidence that LANL truely is rotting from within. I agree with 04:29:21 PM: a good housecleaning is way overdue.

Doug - Thanks for maintaining the blog. Most folks can easily separate the wheat from the chaff. It is good to have an open forum to give the management a daily reminder of what honesty is.

Welcome back Doug. Hope the ride was good!

I have to disagree with you about LANL rotting from within. I believe the vast majority of folks here-both technical and support want to do what they are paid to do. Because of some very poor management-pre Nanos and Nanos the lab has become what it is today. With HONEST COMPETENT leadership, maybe with a little integrity and modesty thrown in for good measure this will be a great place again-both for science and as a place to work.

Again welcome back and thank you to you temporary host. Regardless of what some others have said this forum has been helpful and even therapeutic. Keep it up!

"I believe that I prefer to leave them right where they are, out in the open for everybody to see as clear evidence that LANL truely is rotting from within.."

AND I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. MOST OF THESE TYPES WILL ONLY BE SEEN IN THIS BLOG. WELCOME BACK DOUG!!

There are currently some 1500 visitors to the blog on a given weekday. That's a fair amount of traffic and the cohesion and information sharing it provides seems like a worthwhile thing, even though you will get the inevitable tools like those upthread.

A certain other LANL-themed blog, on the other hand......
