Auditors say lab too costly

Some lawmakers suggest firing staff, shutting down Los Alamos facility
By Ian Hoffman, STAFF WRITER

Federal auditors say the government overpaid almost $30 million to the University of California for national lab management offices in Oakland and elsewhere over five years, atop $14 million of inappropriate costs at UC-run Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Lawmakers were incensed at those costs Thursday, with one Republican congressman suggesting firing the entire Los Alamos staff and a Democratic congressman talking of shutting the lab down.

Comments:
Does anybody really believe that Admiral Butthead shut down LANL without the full concurrence of the DOE?

This is just more malfeasance on the part of the auditors, irresponsbile reporting on the part of the media, and blow-harding on the part of the Members of Congess.

The 5/6/2005 07:20:22 AM has it correct. The DOE WAS consulted prior to the standdown.

Role of the NNSA During Resumption

"...one Republican congressman suggesting firing the entire Los Alamos staff and a Democratic congressman talking of shutting the lab down." This is so typical of the infinite wisdom of our political leaders and is clearly a way of saying, "Hey, look at me!". This approach is "substantially equivalent" to brain surgery with a chain saw.

5/6/2005 07:34:37 AM notes that we have bi-partison stupidity and arrogance in the Congress.

And all the while Congress seems happy, or at least complicit, in pumping somewhere between 2 and 9 billion dollars *per month* into Iraq.

LANL has problems, and problems that can be fixed. So does NNSA, LLNL, SNL, and the rest of the complex.

And Congress is just as complicit in fomenting these problems as UC, but has almost no self-awareness of their role, unlike the other players.

5/6/2005 07:34:37 AM Said "This approach is 'substantially equivalent' to brain surgery with a chain saw."

Close, but I think hemorrhoid surgery with a chain saw is a better analogy!

The auditors have been feasting on LANL for a number of years. A compentent audit investigates performance against a standard, a contract, etc. These DOE auditors are just firing for effect. Never forget that an auditor is only an account that is too dumb to steal.

Similarly, a member of Congress is a lawyer who is too dumb to practice, but not too dumb to steal.
